A transgender film and video festival

in memory of Rita Hester

Hanarchy Now Productions, JRI Health, the Transgender Education Network, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health present the first international film and video festival of movies with transgendered themes. May 18, 19, and 20 at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard Street, Brookline. A festival pass is $18; $7.50 for each evening. TUESDAY 18

Beginning at 7 p.m., Outlaw, Tranny TV, Ma vie en rose, and Hermaphrodites Speak! will screen.

Outlaw (US, 1996, 27 minutes). Directed by Alisa Lebow. A portrayal of activist and author Leslie Feinberg.

Tranny TV (US, 1998, 25 minutes). Directed by Marla Leech. A sampling of trannies on commercial television, including RuPaul kissing Dennis Rodman; Billy Crystal; and at least one clip from All in the Family.

Ma vie en rose (Belgium, 1997, 88 minutes). Directed by Alain Berliner. A Golden Globe winner, this film is about a little boy who feels like a girl.

Hermaphrodites Speak! (US, 1996, 30 minutes). Video footage of eight transgendered people talking about their lives.

WEDNESDAY 19

Beginning at 7 p.m., Remembrance, Chocolate Babies, The Salt Mines, and The Transformation will screen.

Remembrance (Canada, 1997, 8 minutes). Directed by David McPherson and Chris McCune. Remembrances of slain transgendered people.

Chocolate Babies (US, 1997, 83 minutes). Directed by Stephen Winter. Blending fantasy with tragedy and comedy, this film tells the story of an underground band of HIV-positive queer activists of color who make headlines with their outrageous surprise attacks on conservative politicians.

The Salt Mines (US, 1990, 47 minutes). Directed by Carlos Aparicio and Susana Aikin.

The Transformation (US, 1997, 58 minutes). Directed by Carlos Aparicio and Susana Aikin. A 1997 Emmy Award winner, this documentary explores the difficult choices made by an HIV-positive, homeless, Latino transvestite prostitute who is recruited by born-again Christians.

THURSDAY 20

Beginning at 7 p.m., Murray for Mayor, You Don't Know Dick: Courageous Hearts of Transsexual Men, A Mermaid Called Aida, Trappings of Transhood: A Documentary on Gender Identity, An Adventure in Tucking with Jeanne B., and Transmission will screen.

Murray for Mayor (US, 1997, 4 minutes). Directed by Lucia Davis. A drag king campaigns for mayor of New York City.

You Don't Know Dick: Courageous Hearts of Transsexual Men (US, 1997). Directed by Candace Schermerhorn and Bestor Cram. An award-winning documentary featuring six in-depth interviews with female-to-male transsexuals.

A Mermaid Called Aida (India, 1996, 52 minutes). Directed by Riyad Wadia.

Trappings of Transhood: A Documentary on Gender Identity (US, 1998, 30 minutes). Directed by Christopher Lee and Elise Hurwitz. This documentary explores the gender continuum through interviews with men who identify as metamorphs, boydykes, dykefags, and transfags.

An Adventure in Tucking with Jeanne B. (US, 1993, 9 minutes). Directed by Mihra-Soleil Ross. A hilarious account of a drag queen going through a ritual of undressing.

Transmission (Canada, 1998, 8 minutes). Directed by Ivan E. Coyote.
