Pakoras at Saini Sweet Shop

Indian simmer

by Nancy Kalajian

NOSHING & SIPPING
The array of Indian desserts at Saini Sweet Shop in Somerville's Union Square may be eye-catching, but the savory snacks are worth a look themselves. Inside the crispy vegetable samosas (50 cents each) is a tumble of potato squares, green peas, ginger, mango powder, coriander, chili powder, cumin, garlic, and salt. The vegetable pakoras, at three for a dollar, are filled with spinach, onions, potatoes, and assorted spices. You'll also get a small container of snappy tamarind and onion chutney you can pour over your samosas or pakoras. Then sit inside or take them to go.

Saini Sweet Shop is located at 65 Summer Street, near the Shell station, in Somerville. Call (617) 623-2603.
