JUST SAY K.I.T.T.
Airwolf, Knight Rider, and A-TEAM memories

BY ANDREW SOMERVILLE

High octane television came to an unprecedented pinnacle in the height of the “Let’s kick ass!” Reagan years. Packing living rooms from Taunton to Tacoma, this testosterone-driven, “shoot ‘em up” genre had a simple premise: ride around in hot cars with hot women and try to save the world from the burden of rogues, thugs, and drugs (which most of the actors were probably using). Oh, how we miss that time. So turning back the clock to a time when Reality TV was nonexistant, the “Superbowl Shuffle” was at the top of the charts, and Lowenbrau was the most refreshing beverage on draft, we found three Web sites swimming in ‘80s machismo, high-tech transportation, and whup-ass.

1)  “Airwolf is the fastest and deadliest Helicopter ever created,” says this fan site, “a Mach One chopper that can kick ass.” And one of the masterminds behind the ass-kicking was a white-suited man named “Archangel.” Unfortunately the Web site doesn’t include a peak under his mysterious black eye patch -- which all of us die-hard Airwolf (1984-1987) fans would think would be in an NC-17 episode entitled “Archangel reveals all.” However, the Universal Studio creators of this state-of-the-art Airwolf Web site (www.airwolf.org) were definitely on a mission to impress their viewers while at the drawing board: the layout is clear, sharp, and easy to follow. Read up on everything from the exotic location shoots to real life interviews with the stars that made Airwolf such a successful series for four seasons.

 2) “…A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist” reads the main index of this Knight Rider (1982-1986) fan site. And while I was interested in the dangerous world as a kid, I was more interested in wondering how one could transform an ordinary looking rig into a CIA briefing room on wheels. Unfortunately, this in-depth Knight Rider page (http://members.fortunecity.com/knightriders/index2.htm) doesn’t go into that, but it is loaded with totally rad memorabilia. Everything from the original “Déjà vu” pilot script, to the complete 1984 Knight Rider trading card series (only available in Europe). This is a must-see for anyone who thought K.I.T.T. was the coolest car on the block.

3) - If you have a problem. If no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire: THE A-TEAM

Every week they were hired, and every week there was the same climatic escape scene. The one where Mr. T drove the van with pride and George Peppard rode shotgun with that “you suckas” grin on his face. As A-TEAM (1984-1987) is no more, this site has not been updated since the 90's, and visually it’s as unstimulating as Joyce Dewitt of Three’s Company. However, the A-TEAM (www.xs4all.nl/~jmm/a-team/) Web site does serve a purpose. Check out the fascinating audio page which enables you to here famous one-liners by your favorite A-TEAM characters in both English and German: “Halts Maul Idiot Und Komm” is “Shut Up Fool and Come On.”
