St. Punk's Day
Warped Tour reunites in Boston and Dropkicks celebrate St. Patty's Day
BY CARLY CARIOLI

It’s no secret that two of the Warped Tour’s biggest draws in its decade-long history are from Boston — in recent years, if Dropkick Murphys weren’t co-headlining, then the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were. And when the venerable skate-punk tour makes its 10th-anniversary cross-country dash next summer, it’ll conclude with what organizers are calling a one-off, "once-in-a-lifetime" reunion show here in Boston; the tentative date is August 20, but a venue hasn’t been set. Exactly who will be playing that reunion gig hasn’t been settled yet either, though we’d bet our plaid bondage pants that the Dropkicks and the Bosstones are on the short list. In a statement last week, tour founder Kevin Lyman said, "We’ve invited many bands from previous tours to perform. We’ve had a lot of interest and will have confirmations in the coming months." Confirmed headliners for the tour thus far include New Found Glory, Taking Back Sunday, and Coheed and Cambria.

Speaking of Dropkick Murphys: the band announced plans for their annual St. Patrick’s Day homestand just before concluding their North American tour with an unusual November 15 appearance at the FleetCenter in the midst of a Bruins. They took to a stage set up overlooking the ice between the second and third periods for a brief set, providing a little extra spark that carried over when Brian Rolston scored in the final minute of overtime to lift the B’s to a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Minutes later, both the night’s Bruin goal scorers — Rolston and Nick Boyton — joined the Dropkicks to sling six-strings on a post-game rendition of "Boys on the Docks." ("They play guitar better than I skate," head Dropkick Ken Casey opined afterward.) In Philadelphia in the mid ’70s, the Stanley Cup–winning Broad Street Bullies flew in — or piped in — Kate Smith when they needed a clutch win; if the B’s are still playing in May, will they bring back the Dropkicks? The band’s St. Patrick’s Day shows, again at Avalon, are scheduled for March 12 through 14 — the weekend before St. Patty’s Day, so as to coincide with the parade in South Boston on Sunday and, of course, a Bruins game on Saturday. And whereas in past years they’ve added several shows after the initial dates sold out, the band say that because of previous commitments, they’ll probably be sticking to just these three. In other words, get ’em now by calling (617) 423-NEXT.
