Not so Mighty
Reports of the Bosstones' Warped Tour dates have been greatly exaggerated, plus a new space for jazz and more

Bosstones correction and update

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones will not, as previously reported, be performing at the Warped Tour’s 10th Anniversary Reunion Show, which takes place August 20 in the parking lot at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, the day after the tour’s official wrap-up date. In an e-mail, Dana Gordon, a spokesperson for the Warped Tour, stated that bassist Joe Gittleman will be on tour with his group Avoid One Thing and that frontman Dicky Barrett will be in Los Angeles with his new job as sidekick on The Jimmy Kimmel Show. When contacted for comment, Gittleman expressed remorse that the group won’t be playing. "I’m not going to be on tour. I’ve been keeping that date open for months. I was really looking forward to it." The Bosstones’ participation had long been rumored and was confirmed to the Phoenix several weeks ago by a source close to the festival, but Gittleman says that they were never confirmed to play: "The date wasn’t open for everybody in the band." The Bosstones are still on official indefinite hiatus, and Gittleman says there are no plans to perform in the foreseeable future. "I was certainly leading the charge for some time off, but I was disappointed that we didn’t do the Throwdown this year. I’d really like people to be able to see the Bosstones."

The Bosstones have been frequent headliners of the Warped Tour throughout the festival’s decade-long run; the anniversary show on the 20th will go on without them but with sets by Rancid, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Andrew W.K., Sick of It All, and a large Boston contingent including Dropkick Murphys, the Unseen, and Lost City Angels. Tickets are $32.50; call (617) 931-2000.

A new space for jazz

A little more than a month ago, Fenton Hollander and his Water Music/Mainstage booking agency presented their last Regattabar show after 19 years at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square (the Regattabar, meanwhile, has begun booking jazz acts under the auspices of the Blue Note club out of New York). Hollander proceeded with off-site shows (including this past weekend’s Bad Plus show at the Somerville Theatre), but now he’s back in business with a regular room, the performance space at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, which will be called the Real Deal Jazz Club, with a capacity of 220 (the R-Bar was 225). Tables will be set up café style, and food and beer and wine will be served.

In a press release, Hollander noted the good acoustics, the unobstructed view (no supporting columns in the audience), the close proximity to the Lechmere T stop, and the 1100-capacity East Cambridge Garage, with its $3 fee for nights and weekends. He also announced an impressive schedule of events running into December. Booked thus far: the Maria Muldaur Quintet "Remembering Peggy Lee" (August 7); David Maxwell’s Maximum Blues with guest Nicole Nelson and Greg Piccolo (August 27); the Juanito Pascual Flamenco Quartet (August 28); the Rebecca Parris Quartet (September 10); the Danilo Pérez Trio (September 16 and 17); the Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quartet (September 24 through 26); the Charlie Hunter Trio (September 30); Patricia Barber (October 1 and 2); Marta Gómez (October 30); the Donna Byrne Quartet (November 6); the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio (November 12 through 14); the Milton Academy Jazz Band (November 14 Sunday matinee); vocalist Lyambiko (November 19); the Jim Hall/Dave Holland Duo (December 2 through 4); the Rebecca Parris Christmas show (December 12); and the McCoy Tyner Trio with Gary Bartz (December 16 through 19).

Hollander expects to announce more bookings soon. The Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center is located at 41 Second Street in East Cambridge; for information and tickets, call Water Music/Mainstage at (617) 876-7777.

NEMO news

The eighth annual NEMO Music Festival & Conference has begun announcing artist and industry participants for this year’s event, which is scheduled for October 1 and 2 at the Hyatt Regency Boston. Thus far, confirmed bands include the Black Keys, the Slip, Further Seems Forever, John Butler Trio, the Perceptionists (with Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, and Fakts One). Among the record labels presenting showcases will be Rounder, Fenway Recordings, Q Division, Velour, Rainbow Quartz, and Doghouse. Workshops, panel discussions, and clinics will have the participation of staff and A&R reps from Columbia, V2, Razor & Tie, American Recordings, Octone, RCA, TVT, Island/Def Jam, J Records, Aware, Koch, Atlantic, and Capitol. More bands and industry participants are to be announced in the coming weeks.

NEMO is modeled along the lines of the older, larger South by Southwest Music Conference, which is held every March in Austin, and the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, which this year will be held October 13 through 16. Over the course of the NEMO weekend, bands will perform at venues throughout the city, including the Paradise, Club Passim, Harpers Ferry, T.T. the Bear’s Place, Avalon, Axis, and the Middle East. To register for the NEMO Music Festival and Conference, or for more information, go to www.nemoboston.com.

NEMO (which stands for New England Music Organization) is also the presenter of the annual Boston Music Awards, which will celebrate this year’s winners in a concert at Avalon on September 29. That event will be a mostly invite-only fundraiser for its NEMO Scholarship Fund for aspiring student musicians. Ballots for the BMAs will be published in the Boston Herald and on-line at the NEMO Web site the second week of August.
