Gimme indie rock
Plus Art Spiegelman and Candace Bushnell

ART SPIEGELMAN

The comix legend gives a slide lecture on his In the Shadow of No Towers, a gripping, loose-jointed narrative that uses the September 11 attacks as a springboard for musings on the nature of cartooning, fatherhood, and what it means to be an American, at the Peabody Essex Museum, East India Square, Salem | September 20 | 7 pm | $30 | 866.745.1876.

INDIE ROCK AT THE MFA

After a spring-and-summer series that brought sellout shows by Ida, Superwolf, Magnolia Electric Company, and Four Tet to the Museum of Fine Arts, the Phoenix and the MFA have teamed up to bring you another round of mad Pitchfork-y art-rock stuff. Look for Black Dice on September 9, the Voltron-ized Notwist/Themselves superband 13 & God with local indietronic dudes Boy in Static on September 18, Fiery Furnaces on October 12, the Dirty Three on October 16, and the Mountain Goats on October 27. The MFA’s at 465 Huntington Ave, Boston | 617.369.3306.

CANDACE BUSHNELL

Roll your eyes if you must, just don’t deny that it’s been easier to get laid since this woman started publishing. The ranks of Sex in the City groupies are likely to expand with Bushnell’s latest, Lipstick Jungle. She’ll read from it September 15 at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, and the event is guaranteed to sell out in advance. That’s at 290 Harvard St, Brookline | $2 through Brookline Booksmith | 617.566.6660.

ARTS CENTRAL 2005

Cambridge’s hippest neighborhood throws itself a block party that looks like a bigger, better version of the Central Square World’s Fair, with an open studios and one of those " Taste of (Insert City Here) " things thrown in for good measure. Musicians, dancers, theater companies, and comedians will share curb space with 100 local artists, eateries, and fashionistas while area businesses throw open their doors for tamale-making workshops, hair-cutting classes, behind-the-scenes tours, and more, September 17-18 at various locations indoors and out | http://www.centralsquarecambridge.com/artscentral.
