Clementines
Oh my darlings ...

Within the fruit genre, oranges always seem like the problematic, tempestuous sibling. Only sometimes sweet, always a struggle to peel, and forever leaving pesky dribbles in their wake, they raise the question “Why bother?” Especially when Fuji apples, Florida grapefruits, and California kiwis are to be had.

But as each winter steamrolls us, there is one saving grace amid the wet clothes and clenched shoulders: clementines. It’s hard to believe that these tidy, always sweet, fist-size, tangerine-like fruits are even related to the high-maintenance orange. But they are. Packed in five-pound crates to promote healthful snacking, these favored citruses from Spain provide not only a punch of vitamins C and A to combat winter colds, but also bite-size pieces perfect for popping in your mouth as a quick, easy treat. It’s rare that craving coincides with health benefits, so we’re making the most of the last month of this fruit’s peak, and snatching up as many of those wooden mini-crates as possible.
