Upcoming local dining event

There’s certainly no shortage of cheap food in this town, and some of it is quite good, irrespective of its meager price tag. But while the old adage "You get what you pay for" doesn’t always hold true when it comes to the food at our city’s most affordable restaurants, it quite often does in the case of said restaurants’ ambiance.

Thank goodness, then, for deals like the one on offer at Sandrine’s Bistro (8 Holyoke Street, Cambridge). For the next 10 months, Boston’s only French/Alsace restaurant is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and we diners are the luckier for it: chef-owner Raymond Ost is offering a rotating cast of $10 specials — like the Alsatian pizza called flammekeuche, a crispy flatbread topped with a variety of meats, vegetables, and cheese (available for $10 through February). Order a special double dessert prepared by newly returned (and legendary) pastry chef Lee Napoli; then wash down your meal with one of the wines being poured for less as part of the celebration.

Far from being a greasy spoon or hole-in-the-wall ethnic joint, Sandrine’s is a charming, romantic, and often overlooked bistro tucked away on a Harvard Square side street. So while your wallet might think you just ate at the corner dive, you’ll know better. Call 617.497.5300 for reservations and information.
