A Life Once Lost, As I Lay Dying, and more
BY CARLY CARIOLI

A Life Once Lost, "Vulture" (Ferret)

Dimebag Darrell’s still dead, but Pantera thrash lives on with these Philadelphia metalcore marauders. On "Vulture," ALOL borrow Dimebag’s concise, razor-sharp phrasing and his liberal use of fake-harmonic punctuation. Old tricks, but still brutally efficient and oddly graceful.

Sentenced, "Let Today Become the Day" (Century Media)

"Scandinavian metal" is the euphemism for the death-metal revival catalyzed by Sweden’s In Flames, but Finnish bands like Sentenced have largely gone ignored. These guys have been honing pop-friendly speed metal à la late-’80s Metallica. Unfortunately, "Let Today Become the Day" is a track from The Funeral Album, a standout on their farewell effort.

As I Lay Dying, "Meaning in Tragedy" (Metal Blade)

Card-carrying members of the In Flames fan club, this San Diego group overhauled their line-up for the new Shadows Are Security, taking a cue from fellow Californians Avenged Sevenfold by adding a few well-placed emo choruses. "Meaning" sums up the moment in junior high school when you realize adults are just as scared of you as you are of them.

A Wilhelm Scream, "Killing It" (Nitro)

New Bedford’s AWS are still fast and furious, but this track, from Ruiner (due in August), finds them checking their Bad Religion fetish at the door, getting their screamo on, stopping on a dime to tie a ribbon around their hooks, and remembering how good three-part speed-punk harmony feels.
