Christmas time is here
BY MATT ASHARE

Holiday songs are a necessary evil — the secondary smoke of December. No, they won’t kill you, yet they can be annoying as hell. But I’m no Scrooge. So at the risk of promoting the inevitable growth of this cottage industry, I’m offering a few gems worth checking out.

The LeeVees, "Goyim Friends"

Guster frontman Adam Gardner, who would seem to be a member of the tribe, has penned an entire album of amusing Jewish holiday-themed songs, Hanukkah Rocks (Reprise). You can download the whole thing at iTunes or check out the four downloads at the LeeVees’ MySpace site. It really is a toss-up between the ska groove of the disc’s title track and this ode to all your pals who are stuck celebrating Christmas. Oh, and the LeeVees play the Paradise on December 27.

Black Crowes, "Back Door Santa"

Yeah, it’s just another blatant Muscle Shoals R&B ripoff (a cover of an old Clarence Carter tune) from the reunited Black Crowes, but it beats the hell out of "Feliz Navidad." I mean, it’s funky. And it really does sound like some lost 45.

Hilly Kristal, "I Wish You a Merry Christmas"

Yeah, Hilly’s better known for booking bands than for being in one. And this recording, from a CBGBs 1976 single, is a reminder both that the seminal punk club was supposed to be a haven for roots music and that Hilly was always destined to have a better run as a club owner than as a crooner. Still, with CBGBs closing its door, it’s worth getting a little nostalgic.
