Little Louie Vega
SOUL HEAVEN: LONDON AND IBIZA
(suSU import)

Perhaps house music’s most gifted first-generation remix DJ, Little Louie Vega lives up to his reputation on this two-disc set, his music swirling and reverberating in both the deep-house-style "London" session and the dreamy, lounge-like "Ibiza" program. With risky quick cuts of slightly mismatched songs, he depicts intoxication, giddiness, dancers gliding and swooning. Vega selects a lot of fusion jazz and several bedroom-soul tracks, and they keep the music purring along at medium boil until, here and there, the session veers into heady Africanisms. The inclusion of a samba in his "Ibiza" set will surprise patrons of that isle’s famed disco clubs, with their dedication to Eurodisco trance. But Vega’s imagined seascapes full of costumed revelers and London cityscapes thick with foggy beats and pungent romanticisms transcend nomenclature. Special treats here are Harry Romero’s "Go Back" update of Robert Owens’s "Back in the Day" and Donna Summer’s classic "I Feel Love," the song that birthed almost the entire trance genre. Vega honors the tradition even as he improvises furiously on it.
