THE LIKE
ARE YOU THINKING WHAT I’M THINKING
GEFFEN

The three young women in the Like — guitarist/singer Z Berg, bassist Charlotte Froom, and (the eldest member) 21-year-old drummer Tennessee Thomas — come from musical families: their dads are A&R man Tony Berg, producer Mitchell Froom, and Elvis Costello’s drummer, Pete Thomas. And they’re from the LA scene that produced Rilo Kiley and Phantom Planet. Their debut album shows a Bangles-like knack for pretty, hook-laden, guitar pop with rockist attitude. Producer Wendy Melvoin (of Prince and the New Power Generation) brings out the dynamic tension between Berg’s guitar washes and Thomas’s propulsive drumming. Berg’s clarion vocals recall Harriet Wheeler of the Sundays; they’re particularly effective when paired with a strong guitar hook on "(So I’ll Sit Here) Waiting" and "Bridge to Nowhere." This is an uneven debut from a band who have more connections than a circuit board, but the high points suggest that the Like might just bridge the dreamy guitars of the early ’90s shoegazers they grew up on and the radio-friendly pop of an Avril Lavigne.
