Honeypump's Web site

NEST's official Web site

This Sunday, MassArt grad and Honeypump Productions founder Ben Sisto will have a chance to oversee the fruits of his efforts to jumpstart the underground-music scene when indie-rockers, vinyl hounds, DJs, makers of strange craft-like products, and volume dealers in assorted crap (from books to snacks and art to junk) descend on his alma mater’s Pozen Center. His Punk Rock Flea Market has become a regular thing: this is the sixth. But this time, it’ll be the start of something bigger: PRFM6 will kick off the first ever NEST Festival (North East Sticks Together), a week of DIY shows at seven local venues — Allston’s Great Scott (GS), O’Brien’s (OB), and ReGeneration Records (RG); Mass College of Art (MA) and the Northeastern University quad (NU) in Boston; and Cambridge’s ZuZu (ZZ) and Middlesex Lounge (ML) — with more than 100 local artists and a few national ringers.

That NEST is taking place a week before NEMO is, Sisto says, just a coincidence. "We’ve heard that people think we’re anti-NEMO or that we’re competing with NEMO," he says. "But 90 percent of the bands who are playing NEST wouldn’t play NEMO anyway. So really, this is just an alternative. We think there are a lot of people in Boston who wouldn’t normally go out to some of these clubs. We want to give them a chance to throw a dart at a list of 100 great bands and find that one show that’s going to make them want to go see more local music." For those without darts, we’ve had our critics pick 10 good places to start; you can also check http://www.nest2005.com/.

THE GOSSIP | THE MULES | BIG BEAR | WE ARE WOLVES

The Gossip’s Beth Ditto is likely sick of being compared with Big Mama Thornton and other large women of the blues. She’s not just big, she’s deep, with a powerful, raunchy voice, a commanding stage presence, and an insistence that the audience get involved. From Olympia by way of Arkansas, she’s got greasy Southern-fried roots that give her garage rock an extra kick. The Gossip’s new "Standing in the Way of Control" 12-inch comes with a Le Tigre remix. | Sept 19 | GS

MARK ROBINSON | CARLISLE SOUND | YONI GORDON

Earlier this year, former Unrest frontman Mark Robinson briefly left his post at Houghton Mifflin here in Boston, where he’s spent the past five years designing book covers. But it was for a good reason: the 20th-anniversary party for Teenbeat, the indie label he founded two decades ago in Washington, DC. That milestone passed, it’s time for Boston to do a better job of embracing Robinson and his solo material. This show would be a good place to start. | Sept 19 | ZZ

PROTOKOLL | HO-AG | ROH DELIKAT | REPORTS

Champs of art skronk and noise rock, Ho-Ag are dedicated experimentalists: the band’s ever-evolving nature ensures that no set or song gets played the same way twice. Some things are, however, constant: deftly alliterated lyrics about apocalyptic destruction, jaggedy industrialized guitars, maniacal moog melodies, megaphone. A match made in heaven if you dig spazzing out, dancing, weird fun. Also, Roh Delikat indie-gothtronica chanteuse Kristina Johnson was born for stardom. | Sept 20 | MA

ALEC K. REDFEARN & THE EYESORES | OCTAVE MUSEUM | RAMONA CORDOVA | MELI

Alec K. Redfearn & the Eyesores are more than a mouthful: they’re accordion-steered carnival tuneage for the post-folk gypsy-cowboy apocalypse, with a hot female French horn player. Also, Ramona Cordova sounds like Joanna Newsom handjobbing Antony’s Johnsons to the tune of the Believer compilation. And who cares what Octave Museum sound like? It’s Cave In’s Stephen Brodsky and Scissorfight’s Kevin Shurtleff playing live. | Sept 20 | OB

DJ JUAN MACLEAN | PARTS AND LABOR | MAD MAN FILMS | BADMAN

Former Six Finger Satellite guitarist John Maclean just made one of the year’s best dance albums in his guise as DFA Records’ resident suicidal house robot. Boston-raised and now raising rugrats in New Hampshire, he’s touring this fall with LCD Soundsystem. But for NEST he makes a rare outing to spin records between sets by Boston and Providence bands who channel the bad-karma steez of Nick Cave and Tom Waits. | Sept 22 | GS

MITTENS | PANTS YELL | HATS & GLASSES | THE TEETH

For the sartorially inclined, these accessories-to-rock are looking sharp. Mittens? They’re handy — with a hook, an off-kilter rhythm, an elliptical love song. Pants Yell? Leggy isn’t quite the word, but they look great in blue jeans as they bash out their cryptic bedroom pop. Hats and Glasses are heady, for sure. And the Teeth? Dunno. Shirty, perhaps? | Sept 22 | OB

SECRET DIARY | HIVE MIND | CORNUCOPIA | LUASA RAELON

With fathoms-deep drones that alternate between horrifying and gorgeous, Hive Mind are leading the voting for NEST Act Most Likely To Make You Curl Into The Fetal Position. That late-night, empty-house, dead-lump-in-your-stomach feeling? Hive Mind can give it to you in broad daylight. This shit is Brian Eno on peyote, Richard D. James during a blackout. Viva analog synths! | Sept 22 | MA

TINY HAWKS | MAHI MAHI | MADE IN MEXICO

It’s the bill that Providence built. Tiny Hawks are Art and Gus, two prog-art noise-rockers who drag their drums, double bass, and guitar onto the floor — think Lightning Bolt with fewer BPMs, more melody, no scary masks. Mahi Mahi are an electro-splash duo fond of dancy UFO soundz; Made in Mexico are an Arab on Radar offshoot who sound like a gagged Karen O in a no-wave tide pool. | Sept 23 | MA

WILDERNESS | NIGHT RALLY | TUNNEL OF LOVE | OXFORD COLLAPSE

Self-depreciation quotient: high. Level of lo-fi originality: even higher. Cambridge trio Night Rally channel smart, melodically offbeat indie-nerd music from Talking Heads to Pavement into their own sly mix. Tunnel of Love brandish irreverent costumes and dirty rock mayhem. Headliners Wilderness are Baltimore-based purveyors of angular, atmospheric rock. And Brooklyn openers Oxford Collapse make indie go pop. | Sept 24 | GS

BLACKTAIL | ROCK ’N’ ROLL SOLDIERS

Mysterious hard-rockers Blacktail won’t cop to much, except a verifiable sasquatch obsession and the inclusion of former Anodyne and Cast Iron Hike members. But their Traktor7 debut, Styrofoam Island, delivers an ear-lacerating, divebombing squall of feedback and propulsion. With Oregon-based ringers Rock ’n’ Roll Soldiers, a baby-faced volunteer army who channel Aerosmith’s early fashion sense and the Stooges’ snarl so well, they've been snatched up by Atlantic Records. They may be young uns, but they rock like big boys. | Sept 24 | OB

Picks by Matt Ashare, Carly Carioli, Tia Carioli, Camille Dodero, Mike Miliard, Chris Nelson, and Sarah Tomlinson
