SUNDAY, JUNE 20

AT THE CLUBS

ROCK. The Canadian indie-folk singer-songwriter Hayden had a brief dalliance with the majors, but he’s done his best work since leaving the Geffen-distributed Outpost for the indie Badman. His last disc, Skyscraper National Park, rivaled Grandaddy for its finely wrought pastoralism. He’s upstairs at the Middle East, 472 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square; call (617) 864-EAST.

EVENTS

It’s Sunday. You’re tired, hung-over, and starving, but call and call as you might, none of your friends can be found. What about the usual brunch and uproarious day-after recaps? Where is everyone? Shake it off, sleepyhead, and you might remember that all anyone was talking about last night was the new open-air market in SOWA. The South End Open Market (540 Harrison Avenue, Boston) is in its fifth week, and the crowds keep coming. Boasting over 80 vendors and booths hawking everything from handmade tiaras to potted herbs, Boston’s first weekly bazaar has the city out and shopping. So grab a fresh-brewed cup of iced tea at Caffè Umbra’s booth and stroll over to check out GALVIN-ized Headwear’s new summer totes and the Boston Antique Co-op’s fabulous finds. For more information on the market, check out www.southendopenmarket.com

"LE GRAND DAVID AND HIS OWN SPECTACULAR MAGIC COMPANY" perform at 3 p.m. at Cabot St. Cinema Theatre, 286 Cabot St., Beverly. Tickets $15, $10 for children under 12; (978) 927-3677.

MIDSUMMER REVELS present a Celebration of the Summer Solstice tonight at 6 p.m. at the Children’s Museum, 300 Congress St., Boston. Free; (617) 972-8300 ext. 22.

GAY & LESBIAN

COMING OUT DISCUSSION FOR WOMEN is at 11 a.m. at The Women’s Center, 46 Pleasant St., Cambridge. Free; (617) 354-8807.

AT THE MOVIES

What better way to celebrate Father’s Day than by attending that ultimate musical tribute to the patriarchy, Fiddler on the Roof? Norman Jewison’s 1971 adaptation of the Broadway hit celebrates shtetl life in tsarist Russia, waxing bittersweet and tuneful about its pogroms, its matchmakers, and its sentimental embrace of "Tradition" — which is just one of the numbers you can sing along with in this special screening at the Coolidge Corner Theatre co-sponsored by the Boston Jewish Film Festival. Come dressed as Topol’s Tevye and get some odd looks! That’s at 11 a.m. at 290 Harvard Street in Brookline; call (617) 734-2500.

READINGS/LECTURES

LIZARD LOUNGE POETRY SLAM & JAM is at 7:30 p.m. at the Lizard Lounge, 1667 Mass. Ave., Cambridge. Tickets $6; (617) 547-0759.

POETRY EXCHANGE hosted by Richard Moore is from 3 to 5 p.m. at Harvard Coop, 1400 Mass. Ave., 3rd floor, Cambridge. Free; (617) 489-0519.

THEATER

Sick to death of all the stuff men boast it takes balls to do, Lexington’s Rivka Solomon wrote a 2002 Random House book chronicling tales of female derring-do called That Takes Ovaries!: Bold Females and Their Brazen Acts. Now it’s a play, an open mike, and a movement — the first two of which opened this weekend at the Blacksmith House in Harvard Square. Penned by Bobbi Ausubel, the play is culled from stories from the book in which "women and girls share stories about their own daring, gutsy, courageous, and outrageous deeds." It’s performed by Diversity Lab Theatre, under the direction of Stan Edelson. Afterward, the audience gets into the act, with members sharing "their own ovarian acts" at the open mike and receiving a chocolate egg wrapped in gold foil (a Golden Ovary Award) in exchange. Men need not feel left out: they too can win a leftover Easter egg by delivering testimonials to "the ovaries in their lives — their mothers, sisters, daughters." (Probably it’s not all as gynecological as it sounds: the press release assures us the show is rated PG-13.) Tonight’s 7:30 p.m. show raises funds for Jane Doe, the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. That Takes Ovaries continues through June 27 at the Blacksmith House, 56 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, with shows at 8 p.m. on Saturday and at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets for tonight’s show are $20 and available at the door only. All other shows ask for a $5-to-$20 sliding contribution.

The American Repertory Theatre teams up with Théâtre de la Jeune Lune — a Minneapolis repertory company that puts an emphasis on commedia dell’arte and circus traditions — for a new production of Molière’s 1668 comedy The Miser. Directed by Jeune Lune co-founder Dominique Serrand, the staging will feature five performers from that troupe — including co–artistic director Steven Epp in the title role — alongside ART company members Will LeBow, Karen MacDonald, and Remo Airaldi. Serrand worked with a translator to ensure that the production, which will tour to Louisville and Minneapolis, will "keep the language as brutal today as it was at the time." The Miser, which is performed today at 2 p.m., runs through July 18 at the Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, and tickets are $12 to $69; call (617) 547-8300.
