THURSDAY, AUGUST 5 BENEFITS TRAILER TREATS TO BENEFIT THE BRATTLE THEATRE with trailers and shorts, plus food, and Steven Mardon & the Egregious Typos is at 9:30 p.m. at the Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge. Tickets $15; (617) 876-6837. AT THE CLUBS The hottest underground hip-hop night this season is "Marinate" at the Milky Way (403 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain). Once a month, DJs Tommee and Knife gather their devoted masses to head out for a night of serious grooving — and serious drinking. Tonight’s event is an extra-special jam, packed with heavy grooves and special surprises. First, the whole shebang doubles as a CD-release party for the locally produced Old School in a New Neighborhood compilation. Then, as the evening gets going, up-and-coming Lawrence-based MC Reks will step to the mike. Top that off with rumors of a special appearance by DJ Drama, and you have a night that is sure to throw it down. The door opens at 9; tickets are $5. Check out www.milkywayjp.com for more information. JAZZ. The 12-piece band La Timba Loca fuse traditional salsa with a Cuban-born brew of jazz and funk ("timba"), and they draw on a diverse crew of locally based and other musicians with pan-American heritage: Venezuela (as in lead vocalist/pianist Gonzalo Grau), Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico. La Timba Loca get the dancers moving at Scullers, in the DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel, 400 Soldiers Field Road at the Mass Pike; call (617) 562-4111. SOUL. Fresh off a July residency with her band Bourbon Princess at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, Monique Ortiz returns to the scene of the crime for an August one (every Thursday night), this time all by her lonesome. "Soul Low" aims to be an amalgam of storytelling, poetry, and, of course, singing. Ortiz has a voice like descending dark: deep and all-enveloping, sometimes soporific, often baleful. (Those frequent comparisons with Polly Jean Harvey are not off the mark.) And when it intertwines with suggestive bass lines, that will be enough to ensorcel the sultry, late-summer air in the Lizard’s small subterranean room at 1667 Massachusetts Avenue. The shows start at 7 p.m., and they’re free; call (617) 547-0759. PUNK. The members of Slater have been gigging together since their teenage years, when they won a WBCN battle of the high-school bands. Their new Slater excels at magnetic power pop that reminds us of Jawbox and Jets to Brazil, but they’re capable of burrowing into post-hardcore with a fury that recalls old Quicksand and third-stage Nirvana. The band celebrate the disc’s release on a bill with the Glow, AM Stereo, Fenwick, and Bugs and Rats upstairs at the Middle East, 472 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square; call (617) 864-EAST.
