AT THE CLUBS

JAZZ TANGO. There are plenty of bands around town who incorporate tango into jazz, but the Argentine reed player and vocalist Bernardo Monk, with his ensemble MassTango, likes to give you the whole deal as he practiced it in Buenos Aires: with live tango dancers in a salon-theatrical milieu. His self-released Estación Buenos Aires shows him to be well-versed in the classic and nuevo tango styles of the genre — with lilting textures of saxophone, piano, strings, and bandoneón — and a sure jazz feel. Monk and MassTango, with tango dancer Fernanda Cajide and a partner to be named later, come to Ryles, 212 Hampshire Street in Inman Square, for sets beginning at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10; call (617) 876-9330.

CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERTS

TANGLEWOOD. You were going to treat yourself to at least one lazy evening on the Tanglewood lawn this summer, and now Labor Day is looming. But it’s not too late. This evening, Russian conductor Andrey Boreyko (substituting for Emmanuel Krivine, who had to cancel because of an illness in his family) leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Mendelssohn’s Die schöne Melusine Overture, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, with Lars Vogt, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 4. No word on whether they’ll be playing the usual 1851 revised edition of the Schumann or the more radical (some think) 1841 version. But if the evening gets too placid, you can always get into an argument with the Schumann enthusiasts on the next picnic blanket. That’s at 8:30 p.m. in the Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood in Lenox, and tickets are $16 to $82; call (617) 566-1200.

AT THE MOVIES

OPENING THIS WEEKEND: If you’re not living La dolce vita this summer, at least you can see a new print of Federico Fellini’s 1960 classic starring Marcello Mastroianni as the paparazzo (a term this film originated) who’s jaded by a Rome alive with Vespas and beauties like Anita Ekberg and Anouk Aimée. It’s at the Kendall Square. If you feel you’re up the creek Without a Paddle, you can take a break with this boneheaded comedy, which is what you might get if Road Trip went Deliverance via City Slickers, as a bunch of urban knuckleheads go camping. Matthew Lillard and Seth Green star; Steven Brill (Mr. Deeds) directs. If you’ve been told that you wouldn’t be loved even if you were the Last Life in the Universe, Thai director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang’s magical-realist romantic comedy might cheer you up. It’s at the Brattle Theatre. If you showed up at your apartment late one night and discovered We Don’t Live Here Anymore, you might enjoy this melodrama about infidelity based on two stories by Andre Dubus; it stars Mark Ruffalo, Laura Dern, Peter Krause, and Naomi Watts. John Curran (Praise!) directs. With only a few weeks of summer remaining, you might want to romp like Benji off the Leash, or at least see this sequel featuring the indomitable stray pooch; it’s directed by the equally indomitable Joe Camp. Or if, like us, you’re more the demonic-possession kind of folks, there’s Exorcist: The Beginning. Renny Harlin replaced Paul Schrader as director of this prequel in which young Father Merrin (Stellan Skarsgård) first encounters the Devil in post-WW2 Africa.

If "Soviet comedy" seems an oxymoron, you haven’t been introduced to "The Extraordinary Mr. Barnet." Director and actor Boris Barnet was a real cinema cut-up, as can be seen in this retrospective of six features — three of them silent with live musical accompaniment — at the Museum of Fine Arts. It begins today with the silent The Extraordinary Adventure of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks (1924), in which Barnet stars as a gunslinging cowboy who finds that the conventions of Hollywood Westerns need adjustment in his new environment. Hailed as "the finest comedy of the decade" (beating out the best of Keaton and Chaplin?), it was directed by the great Lev Kuleshov. It screens at 6 p.m. Following it at 8 p.m. (and also screening at 2:25 p.m. on Saturday) is Barnet’s directorial debut, the silent The Girl with the Hat Box (1927), a wacky romantic comedy involving the title shop girl, an obnoxious suitor, a Harold Lloyd–like hero, and lots of sight gags. The MFA is at 465 Huntington Avenue in Boston; call (617) 267-9300.

READINGS & LECTURES

"IRAQ FROM THE INSIDE OUT" is a lecture by Jacki Lyden at 5:30 p.m. at the Massachusetts Historical Society, 1154 Boylston St., Boston. Free; (617) 646-0560.

THEATER

That the Devil is gay is not an assertion of Jerry Falwell (well, not this time) but the premise of an intriguing comedy. In Say You Love Satan, which Zeitgeist Stage Company presents in its area premiere at the Boston Center for the Arts, a Russian-literature grad student named Andrew acquires a seemingly perfect new boyfriend who happens to have "666" tattoo’d on his forehead. Newly minted Devil’s advocate Andrew "learns how far he is ready to go," and "even Satan learns that relationships are all about sacrifice, not just of the human kind." The play is the handiwork of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who for the effort picked up an Excellence in Playwriting Award at the 2003 New York International Fringe Festival. Say You Love Satan continues through September 11 at the BCA, 539 Tremont Street in the South End. Tickets are $25, $15 for August 20 through 22 previews; call (617) 426-ARTS.

JAZZ THEATER. Local musician, actor, director, and playwright Jeff Robinson began bringing his one-man show Live Bird to Boston-area stages about a decade ago. Subtitled "An Intimate Portrait of Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker," it’s set in a Harlem bar in the summer of 1947, when the then-27-year-old Parker was in the midst of recording some of the most influential sides in the history American music. Robinson’s ingratiating stage presence — and his ability to play Parker’s music live — make for a revealing evening. He celebrates Parker’s birthday — August 29, 1920 — by bringing his show for one night only to the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, 56 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10; call (617) 547-6789.
