THERE’S STILL A WAR GOIN’ ON
Camp Casey on the Charles
BY BARRY CRIMMINS

You say you spent George W. Bush’s summer vacation somewhere other than Crawford, Texas? You say you missed out on greasing the slippery slope the administration has plummeted down since failing to secure New Orleans to the Homeland? Never fear, Cindy Sheehan and other Camp Casey luminaries will be in Greater Boston this weekend as part of the Bring Them Home Now Bus Tour.

As the vigil in Crawford ended, Katrina arrived and all of the remaining Camp Casey supplies were shipped to Covington, Louisiana, where another group from the Texas vigil set up an aid station for victims of the catastrophe. It is relatively certain that former FEMA director Michael Brown remains unaware of their efforts.

For the past few weeks, three buses full of Camp Casey’s finest have been crisscrossing the country appearing at rallies and events jam-packed with denizens of a peace movement that has grown exponentially since Sheehan made her stand against the war that needlessly claimed her son’s life.

On Friday, September 16, members of Military Families Speak Out, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and Gold Star Families For Peace will meet with members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation before visiting students at Dorchester High School to explain details of life (and death) in the military often left unmentioned by recruiters. That evening, at 7 pm, a vigil will be held at St. John’s Church, in Watertown, where members of the bus tour will speak.

On Saturday, Sheehan will catch up with the group. There will be an interfaith church service held in Jamaica Plain, followed by a visit to Arlington for Arlington Day events and a stop for a rally at Camp Casey on the Cambridge Commons.

On Saturday night, at 7 pm, the Boston University School of Law will host a forum featuring bus-tour participants and local activists.

After leaving Boston, the tour will make stops in Providence, New Haven, New York City, Newark, and Baltimore, before meeting up with the Central and Southern legs of the tour as well as with the Covington-aid folks at the September 24–26 United for Peace and Justice action in Washington, DC. They’d love to see you there, too.
