GIRL-ON-GIRL VIOLENCE
Patricia pulls no punches
By Deirdre Fulton

Determined to make good on her recent promises to represent the women of Boston —and to scoop up as many votes as she can in the waning days of her citywide campaign for one of four at-large city council seats — Patricia White blamed the increase in violence among teenage girls on their lack of physical-activity options.

"We need to start understanding why girls aren’t being cultivated to be involved in these activities," White said after touring the Wang YWCA in Chinatown.

The Boston Herald recently reported spikes in girl-on-girl MBTA violence; on Tuesday, former gubernatorial candidate Shannon O’Brien wrote an op-ed in the Boston Globe promoting gender-sensitive extracurricular activities for girls. Riding the momentum, White is advocating a staff liason for girls in sports within the Boston Public Schools.

In recent weeks, White has offered women-specific initiatives that evince her recent move to motherhood, as well as a desire to set herself apart from her seven male opponents. Last week, White spoke about the importance of pre-natal vitamins, and vowed, if elected to the council, to help low-income mothers obtain them.

"The best way to demonstrate what kind of councilor you’ll be, is to demonstrate those things throughout the campaign," says White, who played field hockey and swam in high school. The question is, what’s the best way too make sure you get there?
