Date yourself
Greet the new year with a fun or funky calendar

BY KIM WEIDMAN

WITH 2001 NEARLY behind us, it’s time to put up a new calendar and start planning for the year ahead. And with thousands of calendars from which to choose, you should be able to find one that will make you laugh, give you inspiration, or at least offend your boyfriend with pictures of scantily clad Chippendale dancers.

Over at the CambridgeSide Galleria Calendar Club kiosk, you can flip through about 12,000 calendars. And manager Tim Brennan says he’s still unpacking boxes of new arrivals.

" They sent me cases and cases of Britney, and Britney’s not moving as fast as they thought it would, " notes Brennan, who says half his selection is devoted to the perennially popular dog calendars. The Ferret Calendar 2002 ($13.95) marks the ninth year photographer Jeanne Carley has dressed up ferrets as firefighters and chimney sweeps to make them appear lovable. We’ll let you judge her success.

This year, Brennan says Harry Potter calendars are " moving like mad. " The store carries offerings with illustrations from the original books or pictures from the record-breaking movie.

For those in a New York state of mind, Glory: A Celebration of the American Spirit ($10.95) features images of patriotic Americans, such as an Illinois man who painted his entire front lawn like an American flag. All royalties and profits from the calendar go to the New York Times 9/11 Neediest Fund and the Red Cross. Other choices include the New York City: Black & White calendar ($12.99) and the World Trade Center: 2002 Memorial Calendar ($12.99), both showing the city in its pre–September 11 glory.

Find other options at bookstores like Borders and Barnes & Noble, or its subsidiary B. Dalton. The latter carries a selection of New England offerings, including the 2002 Boston Travel and Events Calendar ($12.95) and New England Fishermen ($12).

Stargazers can pick up Moon Signs ($13.95) from Sally Cragin (a/k/a Symboline Dai) online at www.rsvp.com. Daily entries document the phases of the moon and give astrological advice.

For a more individual approach, pick out 12 of your favorite photos and turn them into a calendar. Kinko’s can make a personalized 12-month calendar for $30 in three days.

Brennan says he’s surprised that, with all these options, many customers come back for the same calendar year after year. We can only guess they’ve gotten wind of the Outhouses series. Outhouses: 2002 ($11.99) features an outhouse for all seasons: an outhouse with a surfboard leaned up against it, an outhouse in the snow ...
