There are many disturbing things about this ad from the July 2, 1974 issue of the Phoenix. The drawing of the urbane sophisticate in the black turtleneck, with the self-assured smirk and helmet hair. The photo of the little boy wearing a truly horrifying ensemble: corduroy jacket, plaid shirt, and gingham bow tie. Who dressed this child? Is he supposed to be seated on the lap of the Sophisticated Man? Or is the Sophisticated Man a ventriloquist? Either way, the kid looks like a dummy. One thing this ad teaches us about the Seventies- " stylized haircutting " equals bowl cut. Issue Date: August 28, 2001 |
