Beaches on the Vineyard vary
from crowded strands close to town to nearly deserted "up-island"
expanses. The best beaches, of course, are private. There is some public
parking at Oak Bluffs, South Beach, and Sylvia State Beach, but others
lack spaces for nonresidents. It's easiest, and best for the island, if
you leave your car on the mainland and take a bus, taxi, or bike, or
walk to your destination once you reach the island. For those of you who
do bring your cars, the Vineyard authorities weren't kidding when they
posted No Parking signs along the roads.
