  Gillette Castle State Park, Rte. 82, River Rd., four miles south of East Haddam, CT, (860) 526-2336. The 184-acre park is named after a rugged stone castle built by William Gillette, the original Sherlock Holmes. The park offers picnicking, hiking, field sports, boating, biking, and a nearby ferry. Open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. The castle is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free.
