Best place to hear BSO-level music-making without paying BSO prices
So your date wants to hear the very best classical music Boston has to offer, but he or she's not impressed
with the excellent acoustics in Symphony Hall's second balcony and you can't afford front-row BSO seats?
Try Boston Ballet - the seats at the Wang Theatre aren't exactly cheap, but you get some nifty dancing
thrown in, and Jonathan McPhee is an intelligent, classy conductor. Then there's the Boston Philharmonic,
where Benjamin Zander exudes passion on the podium and gets commitment from his players. For a really
low-budget experience, try to catch Ben conducting the New England Conservatory Youth Orchestra (these
concerts are often free). Or head over to Emmanuel Church, where you can hear a Bach cantata conducted by
Craig Smith and performed by Emmanuel Music as part of the Sunday service. Music doesn't get any better
than that.
