Best spoken-word night

Anyone can listen, but only women can shout out at Ren Jender's Amazon Slam, which takes place on the last Sunday of every month at Ryles. Most poetry nights have a short life span, but the verbal riffs have been echoing in this Inman Square jazz club for several years, and the crowds just keep getting bigger. Participants are expected to demonstrate their own staying power: you must have at least three poems in order to sign up when the doors open at 7:30 p.m. (The slam starts at 8.) And it isn't mandatory, but it sure is fun to stick around after the slam for dancing with DJ She-Bang. Admission for the whole evening is eight bucks, which is a bargain considering how much sweat is being generated for your benefit. For details on upcoming shows, check out www.nestovipers.org.
