Best cheap but classy date

Looking to impress that special someone but can't afford the front row for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Lyric Opera, Celebrity Series, or Boston Ballet? Take heart and check out the back of the second balcony at Symphony Hall. Like most concert organizations, the BSO and Celebrity Series price their seats according to distance from the stage; the closer you sit, the more you pay. And that makes sense when you need to see (opera or ballet, for example). But when you just want to listen to a great orchestra, remember that the sound will rise and collect at the back of the hall. During the Ben Zander/Boston Philharmonic performances of Mahler's Eighth Symphony in Symphony Hall a couple years back, Chorus pro Musica director Jeffrey Rink didn't sit up front (where he certainly could have had a seat); he stood dead center at the back of the second balcony. So forget those $80 front-row orchestra seats and do what the pros do. Back-center second-balcony BSO tickets will cost you just $25 on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons, and a mere $28 on Friday and Saturday evenings. And don't forget to tell your date that he or she has the best seat in the house.

Symphony Hall, 301 Mass Ave, Boston, (617) 266-1200.
