Best store for musical instruments

Everyone shops at Guitar Center, from air guitarists to Tom Petty (he purchased a guitar at the massive Comm Ave institution in September). The store boasts the largest selection of musical instruments in New England, as well as some of the most informed salespeople. Employees go through weekly training to stay up to date on the latest developments in the music world, so they'll be able to answer your questions. The wall where 50 Les Paul guitars hang - a virtual shrine - is itself enough to bring most musicians in the door, but the store also has a quality high-tech division and a great selection of drums and accessories.

Music chain Daddy's will also keep you rockin' in the free world with a large selection of new and used instruments and accessories, all at guaranteed low prices. Although 20 Daddy's stores now hawk guitars, drums, keyboards, and more in Massachusetts and New York, each store still has the feel of a small local business. And the repair center's been voted the best by the National Association of Music Merchants for the past five years: there's nowhere better to take your amp after you blow it out during the "Free Bird" guitar solo.

Guitar Center, 750 Comm Ave, Brookline, (617) 738-5958. Daddy's Junky Music, 165 Mass Ave, Boston, (617) 247-0909; 2234 Mass Ave, Cambridge, (617) 497-1556.
