Best place for a haircut

Though hairstyles come and go -- remember the spray-up fright bangs of the '80s? -- Dellaria Salons manage never to go out of style. For 40 years, Dellaria has been a trusted salon name in New England. Now with 26 locations, including five day spas, Dellaria drew raves from Phoenix readers for its three Boston salons (on Comm Ave, Newbury Street, and Summer Street), as well as its Brookline outpost. What's the secret to their success? Perhaps it's the founder's own patented system, Pyrametrics, in which every stylist is trained. Whatever that term means, it must work: they serve 60,000 clients a month.

For a less theoretical approach, the funky set in Cambridge turn to Judy Jetson. Named for the retro-futuristic cartoon character, the salon embodies a sense of humor and a willingness to help customers walk on the wild side. Though you can certainly get trustworthy traditional styles and treatments, it's also the destination of rock-band members and punksters who want a little purple here, a little fauxhawk there. It's decidedly not your mother's beauty salon (unless, of course, your mother is Sharon Osbourne).
