Best local nonprofit organization
Much talk about homosexuality today inevitably leads to a discussion of gay marriage. However, since 1989, the Network/La Red has addressed another critical issues in lesbian, bisexual, and transgender relationships by providing help for individuals facing domestic abuse. Helmed by abuse survivors, the bilingual organization focuses on empowerment by sharing lessons from those who've overcome such crises. The Network began as an outreach vehicle to raise awareness of domestic abuse in LBT communities. In 1993, the hotline opened and started fielding about 100 calls a year. Now, as one of only a few dozen organizations nationwide to specialize in assisting battered LBT women, the Network serves as a model for such agencies. It now helps more than 500 callers annually, and offers emergency shelter via the Safe Home program. There's also an advocacy program, which includes support groups, safety planning, and counsel when it comes to navigating legal, medical, social, and housing services. Plus, the outreach component is still going strong to uphold the original community-education goal.
