Best urban oasis
With the exception of people who work in the Financial District, Norman B. Leventhal Park - a/k/a Post Office Square Park - is an unknown quantity for most residents of Greater Boston. Which is a shame, because it's the perfect place to go when you need a quick dose of tranquility. The northern end of the park is dominated by a minimalist fountain that spreads the soothing sound of running water; on the eastern side, benches sit under an arbor festooned with creeping vines and hanging pots filled with flowers; the greenhouse-like Milk Street Café occupies the park's southern end; and the entire area is beautifully landscaped and meticulously maintained. It is, in short, a shining example of what parks can do for cities. And it's worth a visit.

Norman B. Leventhal Park, Post Office Square, Boston.
