Internships at The Phoenix

PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Phoenix Media/Communications Group internship program has been structured to provide beneficial and educational intern assignments to qualified and motivated college students, preferably those who would receive college credit. Boston Phoenix, STUFF@Night, and People2People Group internships are offered at our Boston offices; FNX Radio Network internships are offered at our Lynn, Portland and Providence sites; and opportunities in editorial, graphic design, research, finance and sales are offered at our Providence Phoenix and Portland Phoenix offices in those cities.

We are currently actively recruiting internships. Positions do tend to fill quickly, particularly in the editorial departments, so students should send resumes in as soon as possible. We require that all interns be enrolled in classes (summer interns must be enrolled for the following Fall semester) and must be able to make at least a 16-hour (summer), 10 (fall, spring) per week commitment to the company. All internships are unpaid. THE BOSTON PHOENIX
The Boston Phoenix was started in 1966 as a four-page arts and entertainment alternative news weekly. Today, it is the largest regional publication of its kind in the country. The Phoenix is nationally known for its award-winning, incisive journalism and the most comprehensive arts and entertainment listings of any paper in New England. The Boston Phoenix offers internships in the following departments: Editorial Arts and Entertainment: These interns are responsible for photo research and filing, typing manuscripts, transcribing interview tapes, sending tearsheets to record companies, communicating with bands, record companies, and publicists, updating database files for "8 Days", updating the story index, and occasional writing assignments.

Editorial News: Duties for these interns include developing story ideas, assisting staff writers with research, editing short pieces, photocopying, and filing. Again occasional writing assignment based on story availability and the ability of the intern to both write and pitch story ideas.

Editorial Online: Interns assist in the production, maintenance, and promotion of the editorial content on the Phoenix website at http://www.bostonphoenix.com/. Interns will assist in weekly page updates, perform online research related to the newspaper's content, and send out prewritten electronic promotional materials to other web sites, as well as mailing lists and news groups. Experience with the World Wide Web, Macintosh, Netscape and email required, as is an elementary knowledge of HTML. Experience with any of the following is a plus: Usenet, Filmaker, QuarkXPress, and Adobe Photoshop. One of the two workdays per week must be Tuesday or Wednesday.

Editorial Graphic Design: Design interns assist the department in the design and production of the editorial content of the Boston Phoenix, as well as research and scan images for use in the paper, and help maintain our photo files. Candidates must know QuarkXPress and Photoshop. Illustration skills/knowledge a big plus.

Photography: Photo interns assist the design department with scanning and pre-press color correction of images, research images for use in the paper, help maintain our photo files, and shoot photographs for use in the paper.

Classified Display: Duties include providing tear sheets to clients, proofing artwork and line ads, running credit cards of weekly contract clients, assisting in mailing to existing customers, gathering publications for prospective clients, and providing input in to the internet site.

Finance: Interns are responsible for doing account analyses and database work. Other projects may be assigned depending upon the interests and abilities of the intern. Advertising Graphic Design: These interns will produce ad and promotional material for the Boston Phoenix. Candidates must know QuarkXPress.

Human Resources: Intern will administer intern program- screening applicants, setting up interviews, corresponding with intern coordinators at area colleges. Intern will also assist in other functions of the human resources department: placing help wanted ads, compiling payroll information, sitting in on interviews, doing reference checks, and administering benefits.

Marketing/Promotions: Interns are responsible for sending out mailings, carrying out data entry and doing phone work. Also, they assist with copywriting, proofing, editing, market research, and special projects that vary for each season. Information Systems (IS) and Internet: Various intern assignments will include work on the Internet, database management, computer operations, support, and programming.

Internet/New Media: Interns support the Web department for the Boston Phoenix, WFNX, and others. Ideal candidates will have Photoshop and HTML experience, and will be able to commit to a two full day per week schedule.

Internet Customer Service: This intern assists the customer service department by reading mail from customers and reading and/or listening to personal ads by customers prior to these being posted on the internet. Candidates should have basic computer skills, but need not have advanced programming experience.

Internet Personals: This internship is ideal for psychology students with experience in personality testing. Interns who want to apply their knowledge in a business setting will work with our MIS department to conduct personality tests on our Personals Internet sites. Ideal candidates will know Word and Excel, and will have experience and interest in Internet surfing. Knowledge of Photoshop is a plus.

Sales/Advertising: Interns write and proof basic form letters, prepare copy sheets, assist in the creation and deployment of promotional materials, research new business prospects, maintain and update the database of clients, and perform general support.

Traffic: Responsibilities include layout of sections, tracking ad copy, ad filing, answering phones, customer queries, assembling media kits and client contact.

THE PROVIDENCE PHOENIX
Phoenix Media/Communications Group started the Providence Phoenix in 1988. It provides thorough arts-coverage for the greater Providence area, plus award-winning coverage of local issues and events.

The following internship opportunities are available:

Advertising Graphic Design: Intern projects include scanning, designing ads, on screen editing/tweaking, paste up mechanical, sending art back to contributors, filing and organizing. Candidates must know QuarkXPress.

THE PORTLAND PHOENIX
The Portland Phoenix launched on September 16, 1999. It provides award-winning coverage of local arts, issues and events.

The following internship opportunities are available:

PEOPLE2PEOPLE GROUP
The People2People Group consists of People2People.com, Tele-Publishing Inc., TPUK, and AirDate.

TPI clients include The San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner, New York Newsday, The Boston Herald and over 500 newspapers throughout the United States and Canada. TPI launched a sister company (TPUK) in London, England in 1996. It also has a radio division, AirDate, which has over two hundred radio station clients across the country.

The following internship opportunities are available:

Programming: Interns will assist in the programming and updating of several sites. Experience in any of the following disciplines, the more the better: ASP, VB Script, HTML, Java Script, SQL, SMTP, HTTP, XML. Finance: Interns are responsible for doing account analyses and database work. Other projects may be assigned depending upon the interests and abilities of the intern.

Sales/Advertising: Sales interns' duties include comp letters, forecasting reports, client sales reports and analysis.

Marketing: Interns will assist product marketing group in development and maintenance of proposed & existing sites, assist in composition of marketing & promotional materials, create and maintain market relevant statistics and perform relevant competitive intelligence

Graphic Design/Pagination: Interns assist in developing newspaper layouts for papers across the country. You will also have the opportunity to design marketing and promotional pieces to support our staff as well as our clients. Print design experience on a Macintosh platform, specifically Quark Xpress, Illustrator, and Photoshop a plus. AirDate: Intern for AirDate by TPI would help in contacting our 250 radio clients. This would require good communication skills and a bit of writing. Also administrative work including putting together sales kits etc.

Client Services: Interns assist in ongoing relationship management, analysis of business performance, the preparation of proposals and materials to be sent to clients, and will participate in projects identifying newspaper trends, brands and market share.

STUFF MEDIA GROUP
Stuff@night is Boston's hippest and most indispensable nightlife publication. Focusing entirely on what's happening in the city from sundown to sunrise, Stuff@night covers such diverse topics as live music, dance clubs, fashion, bars, restaurants, literature, film, theater, and more. Stuff@night is a publication with attitude, a publication that knows the nightlife scene inside and out, and a publication that is the most vital of its kind in the country.

Editorial: Interns are in charge of: compiling, organizing, and writing blurbs about upcoming "After 5" listings; proofing copy; contributing to the "Hot Page" and other columns; conducting research for special issues; updating and maintaining the editorial library, photo files, and party picture file; and other assorted tasks. We encourage our interns to pitch and write stories for publication.

Graphic Design: Intern projects include: scanning, designing ads/editorial, on screen editing/tweaking, paste up mechanical, sending art back to contributors, filing and organizing. Interns will also have the opportunity to help out in other areas and thus increase their exposure. Candidates must know Quark XPress.

Sales: Intern responsibilities include: assisting in developing and implementing sales and marketing plans, coordinating mailing of deadline information and media kits, conducting research with regard to advertising leads, and updating the sales database.

FNX RADIO NETWORK
Consisting of 101.7FM in Boston, 92.1 WPHX in Portland, Maine, 92.1 WFEX in Manchester, New Hampshire, 103.7 WWRX in Providence, Rhode Island, and fnxradio.com. FNX Radio Network has been praised with the Best Commercial Alternative Radio Station award four times, and carries with it a tradition of 20 years on the cutting edge. The FNX Radio Network offers internships in the following departments:

Music Department (Boston) - Interns in this department will assist the Music Director with all the necessary steps to ensure songs get on the air, including writing and researching music information, assisting with music testing, and maintaining the music library.

Marketing/Promotions (available in Boston, Providence and Portland) - Interns in this department are expected to assist the Marketing/Promotions Manager with all duties including market research, promotional copywriting, give-aways/contests, and events both in the office and on-site. Tasks can range from assisting with press relations and event planning to database maintenance and prize mailings.

Sales (available in Boston, Providence and Portland) - Intern responsibilities include assisting in developing and implementing sales and marketing plans, communicating with clients, conducting research with regard to advertising leads, and updating the sales database. On-Air (available in Boston and Providence)- Interns with an on-air internship assist the DJ's in virtually every aspect of their show, including taking requests, answering questions, pulling spots, and writing material for on-air use. In addition, on-air interns also have the opportunity to learn the WFNX format, how the on-air studio works, and 4-track production.

Production (Boston and Providence) - Production interns assist the Production Director and Assistant Production Director in all aspects of production, including dubbing commercials for reel to cart for airplay, tagging commercials, editing features, gathering "drops/bites" for image production, and mixing 'FNX music tapes for special events.

One in Ten (Boston only) - One in Ten is a news, information, and entertainment talk program for the gay and lesbian community in and around Boston. The intern will assist the producer by: contributing ideas and suggestions for One in Ten topics, making calls to line up potential guests on the show, researching materials, and assisting with taped production pieces and with some writing assignments.
