I shook my head in dismay when two of my companions decided to try a bottle of Tequiza with dinner at Acapulco Restaurant. Maybe it’s the " z " in its name, but the tequila-flavored drink sounded a bit too much like Zima to me.

But Tequiza proved a pleasant surprise. It’s no unnatural-tasting malt beverage. Instead, the lager offers a strong hint of lime without compromising the lightness of Latino beers, such as Sol or Presidente. I thought Tequiza’s combination of blue-agave nectar and lime juice made it taste like a margarita. My husband, however, insisted that it is a low-maintenance Corona — citrusy, without the bother of trying to shove multiple lime slices down the bottleneck.

One thing is for certain. It’s muy refreshing served ice cold and delicioso with chips and salsa.

Available for $6.39 (plus deposit) for a six-pack at Blanchard Liquors, 103 Harvard Avenue, in Allston, and at other area liquor stores.
